"In Defenselessness My Safety Lies" The title is one of my favorite lessons from A Course in Miracles (#156). It always brings me release from whatever stress I am experiencing. "You who have played that you are lost to hope, abandoned by your Father, left alone in terror in a fearful world made mad by guilt; be happy now. That game is over. Now a quiet time has come, in which we put away the toys of guilt, and lock our quaint and childish thought of sin forever from the pure and holy minds of Heaven's children and the Son of God." The original was in India ink, gesso, and collage. 18x24. $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
My Salvation Comes From Me (Lesson 70 ACIM) "When you realize that all guilt is solely an invention of your mind, you also realize that guilt and salvation must be in the same place. In understanding this you are saved...It also means that nothing outside yourself can hurt you, or disturb your peace or upset you in any way. Today's idea places you in charge of the universe, where you belong, because of what you are." Acrylic. 18x24. $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
Every Moment Is A Pink Fish Acrylic and charcoal. 18x24. (See story below) $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)

A little "Her" story...
I'd like to share a little story with you about the "leaping ladies" in the artwork above. She's a symbol of who we are when we are willing to question what we believe! The first one appeared as the one to the right (Stand Tall).
I discovered her in the leap! In 2008, I moved out of a 24 year marriage. I had no idea how to do it. I taught art to adults very part time. Every six weeks a new class would start and I had no idea if people would sign up. I had no "guaranteed" income to count on. I had fears of being lonely. I just knew I had to do it.
I took a break from my art work after my son died in 2004, knowing it/I would never be the same again. When I found Sabrina Ward Harrison's book, Spilling Open, The Art of Becoming Yourself, I lay on my friend's living room rug and screamed in joy and relief. This felt so right--my new form of expression...to combine text and images. I had been writing poetry and creating paintings but had never combined the two into one expression.
So here it is, folks. And even though I am sharing it...I want you to know I createdfor me...not for anyone else...just to express what I was feeling and thinking!!! That is one way we can honor ourselves. We hear a lot of talk about loving ourselves...and some of us wonder how...or what it would even look like...
Express Yourself...
One reason I am sharing this with you is because I want to offer you a window: another way to discover, share, speak, express and remind yourself of your truth. There is no right or wrong way to do it. I've been teaching art classes since 2006, and my favorite part of it is encouraging people to express what's inside of them.In my experience this goesperfectly with The Work and can actually arise out of The Work. Most of my "artwork" now is inspired by what comes to me when answering question four: who would I be without that thought? and also while meditating on ideas in A Course in Miracles.
Every moment is a pink fish...
I took this photo on a visit to Mote Marine Laboratory in Longboat Key, Florida, while visiting my parents many years ago. I love this photo--the luscious pink color, the motion, the transparency--all completely unpredictable when taking a picture of moving fish in an indoor aquarium.
I feelso good when I look at it. I love seeing every moment as this pink fish..it's that quick, always born again and again and again ... and warm and rich and overflowing with rich pink and violet, Love.
Thank you for visiting...
I hope it has enriched your life today. I would love to hear your thoughts, comments or questions.
Where the Mind Meets the Heart This is truly one of my all time favorites. The original was started with a really loose sketch in India ink on sketch paper. Then I painted with acrylics on top of that and added alot of collaged pieces created while messing around. There's also a bit of a torn up watercolor painting. (Everything works together for good.) I see her as the bridge...where the mind meets the Heart...exactly what happens when we are doing The Work. The mind asks...the Heart (the other part of the mind) answers...and that's the end of separation--inner conflict. 18x24. $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
Who Would I Be Without that Thought? It's really hard for me to choose which one of these is my favorite. I love this one so much, too. It was started as a variation on a leaping lady...to show just a part of her and bigger. The original is all in India ink, though there are many pieces of it that are collaged on...like those two little critters...Color is wonderful, but there is something really compelling about black and white. 18x24. $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
You don't have to be perfect India ink. 20x15. $140 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
Where ever you go, I am
Mixed media and collage. 18x22. $160 (plus $20 shipping, USA)
You Can't Escape Love Mixed Media and Collage. 18x24. $160 (plus $20 shipping--in USA)
my first "leaping lady"...inspired by girl in a walmart ad--painted with India ink and gesso, and collage inside an old picture book...inspired by Sabrina Ward Harrison's journal to combine images and text... "there will come a time
when no more effort on your part
is required.
the dance will lift you off the floor,
the ceiling long forgotten,
and all the angels who ever sang
will rejoice and welcome you
unto Heaven" 2008
Below is the painting that came five years later...still inspired by the idea that every moment is a pink fish. That's me, asleep in the chair, the pink fish, Wisdom, Holy Spirit, whatever you want to call it, ever flowing, ever available...ever waiting for "me", watching even when I am "asleep". I love the flowingness all over, the swirling, ease, and grace...nothing stuck or static, though the pink fish could also be experienced as the essence of stillness. Writing this I recall how fish can seem to rest completely motionless. That's the Way of It...stillness and motion--both equal. Everything... in the flow.
Every Moment Is A Pink Fish, Acrylic and Charcoal, 18x24, Joy Schultz
Below is my second painting inspired by "every moment is a pink fish". The rocky areas were started with powered charcoal, washed with acrylic paint, real sand was added on top and finally finished with colored pencil on the sand. There's no limit to the materials one can use. The fish has many layers of glazes and gold metalic paint.
